Becoming Our Best

BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT

It's hard to remember sometimes that we are composed of three parts: body, mind and spirit. When we forget to take care of all three in good ways, our lives tend to unravel. And when we remember to take care, life goes well.

Our body needs food & water, exercise and sleep. But it is easy to get into bad habits in each of these areas. So make time for:

• Eating nutritious food on a regular basis.

• Getting some vigorous exercise daily.

• Sleeping about 8 hours a night on a regular basis.

The mind is a very adaptable part of our being. But if challenged only by TV, it can become sluggish and a quick imitator of the latest trash talk and thought. We can help our mind to be its best by:

• Making time for reading something which expands our horizons.

• Having stimulating conversations (The three ascending levels of discussion areas are: things, people and ideas).

• Finding quiet time to think about ways to improve the gift of our mind.

Last and not least, our spirit is the essence of our being. It hungers to find meaning in our existence and is deadened by constant activity and noise. We can cultivate its growth through:

• Connecting to God or our Higher Power daily through prayer or mediation.

• Living a life of healthy self-discipline, and care for all those around us.

• Reflecting on the meaning of this life, our activity in it and what comes after it.

"But Bruce, I don't have time to do what I'm doing now, much less work on an improved life like you've described above. You're being unreasonable!" As one who has said those words in the past, I can only say that we always find time for the activities and people we believe are important in our lives. If I need more time, I can always look at reducing my TV schedule as a starter.....
